Tailor-Made South Africa Journeys

South Africa Safaris, Coastlines & Self-Drive Journeys

South Africa brings together experiences that often require several different countries elsewhere in Africa. A tailor-made journey can combine Cape Town, the Winelands, character-filled small towns, dramatic coastlines and an exceptional safari, with self-drive, private transfers or guided travel selected around your preferred pace.

Why South Africa

One country, many different ways to experience Africa

Leopard on a rocky outcrop during a tailor-made South Africa safari

South Africa can bring together city life, safari, the Winelands, coastlines, mountain landscapes and countryside without requiring every journey to follow the same route. It is particularly rewarding for first-time visitors who want a varied introduction to Africa while keeping the logistics practical.

It is also one of the continent’s strongest self-drive destinations. Cape Town, the Winelands, Little Karoo and Garden Route can be connected by road, while domestic flights and arranged transfers make it practical to add Greater Kruger when the distance is too great for an overland route.

Accommodation ranges from locally run guest houses and country stays to private safari lodges and refined boutique hotels. This allows the journey to be relaxed, active, food-focused, safari-focused or shaped around a balance of different interests and budgets.

  • Strong international access and practical domestic connections.
  • Self-drive, guided touring and private-transfer options.
  • Routes for families, couples, honeymooners, older travellers and small private groups.
  • City, coast, food, wine, landscapes and safari combined at a comfortable pace.
Traveller Suitability

Is South Africa Right for You?

The variety of regions makes it possible to bring different interests together without the journey feeling disjointed.

  • First-time visitors to Africa
  • Families
  • Couples and honeymooners
  • Self-drive travellers
  • Safari-focused guests
  • Food and wine travellers
  • Older travellers and photographers
  • Small private groups
  • Groups with different budgets or interests

The route, accommodation and balance of guided and independent travel are selected around the people travelling rather than forcing every guest into the same style of journey.

Where A South Africa Journey Can Lead

Regions we may include

South Africa is best planned as a connected route. Most journeys combine selected regions rather than trying to include every highlight in one itinerary.

Recommended minimum: 3 nights

Cape Town

Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Signal Hill, the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point Promenade, Bo-Kaap and Kirstenbosch can be combined with the Cape Peninsula, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach and Kalk Bay. Guests may explore independently or include privately guided day tours for easier planning.

Recommended stay: 2–3 nights

Hermanus & the Whale Coast

A coastal stay for promenade walks, beaches, seafood, cafés, markets, hiking and nearby wine estates. Whale season generally runs from July to November, but sightings are natural and cannot be guaranteed. Hermanus remains worthwhile outside the season for its scenery and relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Recommended stay: about 3 nights

Cape Winelands

Stellenbosch, Franschhoek or Paarl can provide a base for wine estates, tastings, food pairings, restaurants, historic architecture, galleries, cafés, cycling and scenic walks. Guests may visit independently or include a guided wine tour with transfers.

Character-filled inland route

Little Karoo

Choose one suitable stop such as Montagu, Robertson, Swellendam or Oudtshoorn for dramatic inland landscapes, smaller historic towns, boutique hotels, country houses, farm stays, local food and wine, and a slower pace.

Coast, forest & nature

Garden Route

Most guests select either Knysna or Plettenberg Bay as their main base. Knysna offers its lagoon, harbour, waterfront, Heads, forests and seafood, while Plettenberg Bay provides beaches, Robberg Nature Reserve, Nature’s Valley, The Crags and access towards Tsitsikamma. Nearby experiences may include Birds of Eden and Monkeyland.

Recommended stay: 2 nights

Panorama Route & Blyde River Canyon

One full exploration day can include God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels, waterfalls, viewpoints and nature. A stay around Hazyview or White River often works well before safari, with transfer times depending on the selected reserve.

Recommended stay: 3–5 nights

Greater Kruger

Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands, Timbavati and other private reserves offer varied wildlife, birdlife and strong opportunities to see the Big Five without guarantees. Private reserves are generally preferred when budget allows, while Kruger can suit self-drive travellers or guests seeking a more affordable safari. Night drives, bush walks and off-road viewing depend on the reserve and lodge.

Recommended stay: about 3 nights

Addo & Eastern Cape Private Reserves

Addo Elephant National Park and private reserves such as Shamwari, Amakhala and Kariega provide a natural safari conclusion after the Garden Route. Options range from self-drive or guided Addo arrangements to lodge-based private-reserve safaris. The region is generally regarded as malaria-free, although guests should obtain personalised travel-health advice.

Why Plan With Us

South Africa planned with first-hand local knowledge

Our founders live in South Africa and have personal roots in the country. The recommendations on this page are shaped by first-hand knowledge of the destinations, driving routes, guest houses, lodges and safari regions used in the journeys we plan.

We build routes around realistic drive times rather than simply linking famous names. This allows us to recommend smaller towns, locally run accommodation and less obvious stops where they genuinely improve the journey.

Local partners provide additional support on the ground, and a personal welcome may sometimes be possible where location and arrangements permit, although this can never be guaranteed.

  • Founders based in South Africa
  • First-hand regional and driving-route knowledge
  • Guest houses and lodges matched to the journey
  • Realistic pacing and practical road-travel advice
  • Restaurant, activity and route recommendations
  • Understanding of Greater Kruger and Eastern Cape safari differences
  • Local partner support during the journey
  • Personal planning around budget and travel style

More Information

Open any question for practical guidance about routing, timing, families, safari expectations, budgets and the two sample journeys.

Is South Africa a good destination for a first journey to Africa?

Yes. South Africa combines straightforward travel logistics, a wide choice of accommodation and experiences that range from Cape Town and the Winelands to self-drive routes and safari. This makes it particularly suitable for travellers who want variety and a gradual introduction to Africa.

It works well for families, couples, honeymooners, older travellers, photographers and small private groups. It may be less suitable for travellers whose highest priority is a consistently remote, low-density wilderness experience throughout the entire journey. Private reserves can provide greater privacy, but complete solitude and private wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

How long should a South Africa journey be?

Eight to nine nights can combine Cape Town, the Winelands and Greater Kruger. Ten to fourteen nights work well for Cape Town, the Little Karoo, Garden Route and an Eastern Cape safari, while twelve to fourteen nights can combine Cape Town, Hermanus, the Winelands, Panorama Route and Greater Kruger.

Fourteen to eighteen nights allow a slower journey with longer stays or additional regions.

Can we self-drive in South Africa?

Yes. Cape Town, the Winelands, Little Karoo and Garden Route work particularly well for confident self-drive travellers. A common arrangement is to self-drive through the Cape and Garden Route, then use arranged transfers for the safari portion.

Private transfers, privately guided touring, safari-lodge transfers and domestic flights between distant regions can be added where they make the journey more comfortable or practical.

What is the best time to visit South Africa?

South Africa can be visited throughout the year, but the ideal route depends on the regions included. Cape Town, the Winelands and Garden Route are particularly popular from September to May. Winter may bring rain, wind and storms, although clear and mild days are also possible and the region continues to offer restaurants, museums, food and wine experiences.

Greater Kruger’s dry season from May to October is particularly popular for safari. April, November and December can also work well, while warmer or wetter months bring greener scenery and different viewing conditions. Whale season around Hermanus generally runs from July to November, but sightings cannot be guaranteed. December to February is busy and often more expensive, so early planning is important.

What wildlife experience should we expect?

Greater Kruger offers strong wildlife variety, birdlife and opportunities to see the Big Five, while the Eastern Cape is particularly known for elephants and can also provide zebra, giraffe, antelope and Big Five possibilities. Addo and Greater Kruger offer different safari experiences and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Lodge game drives may be shared unless a private vehicle is arranged, and other vehicles may be present at sightings. Night drives, bush walks and off-road viewing depend on the selected reserve, lodge and local rules.

Is South Africa suitable for families?

Yes. South Africa offers family rooms, interconnecting rooms, varied activities, manageable self-drive routes and family-friendly safari options. There is no universal minimum age, although around six years and older is often more practical when safari is a major focus. This is guidance rather than a fixed rule.

Lodge and activity age restrictions differ. Private safari vehicles can sometimes be arranged, and self-drive works best when children are comfortable with regular journeys of approximately two to three hours.

Are malaria-free safari options available?

The Eastern Cape offers safari reserves in a region generally regarded as malaria-free and can work particularly well after the Garden Route. South Africa as a whole should not be described as malaria-free, and travellers should obtain personalised travel-health advice for their complete itinerary.

What budget should we allow?

The following figures are starting guidance based on two guests sharing and exclude international flights:

  • 8–9 nights: from approximately $4,600 per person for Cape Town, the Winelands and Greater Kruger.
  • 11 nights: from approximately $4,900 per person for Cape Town, Little Karoo, Garden Route and Eastern Cape safari.
  • 12–14 nights: approximately $6,300–$6,800 per person for Cape Town, Hermanus, the Winelands, Panorama Route and Greater Kruger.
  • 14–18 nights: approximately $6,800–$9,100 per person for a slower or more premium journey.

Final pricing depends on travel dates, accommodation level, safari reserve, room type, rental vehicle, included activities, private guiding, domestic transport and the number of guests. These are not fixed package prices.

How can the sample journeys be adapted?

Cape and Greater Kruger journey

The 13-night example can be shortened, extended in any region, upgraded to more luxurious safari accommodation or adapted to use Kruger National Park for a more affordable safari.

Garden Route and Eastern Cape journey

The 11-night example can be shortened to 10 nights, extended to 12–14 nights, based near Addo for a more affordable safari, upgraded to a private reserve such as Shamwari, Amakhala or Kariega, or expanded with Hermanus or the Cape Winelands.

Do you arrange flights?

Safari Souls Africa does not book international or domestic flights. We can help guests identify suitable flight options and then plan the accommodation, rental vehicles, transfers, safari arrangements and activities around their confirmed schedule.
